Feather, 2021

Feather, 2021 DO LINK

This is a large photograph of a very small feather about the size of my thumb thatI found on the street.

I’ve made this feather blue because it’s the colour of sky and summer and hope. That’s what this photograph is for me: Possibility. What could be. The strong spine and the gentle blue vane.

I’ve made considerable texture in the background, this is the rough and tumble of life.

Feather 2021 is the last of three photographs I’ve made of the the exact same feather. They are so special as a grouping of three.

Beautiful Hydrangea

In 2005, I inserted this hydrangea leaf into my diary. I found it a decade later, photographed it right where it was, on the diary pages.

In 2005, I inserted this hydrangea leaf into my diary. I found it a decade later, photographed it right where it was, on the diary pages, drew around it, photoshopped it to make it exactly as I wanted, blew it up big.

There’s something beautiful about seeing something private blown up large. To be able to see the detail of the veins of the leaf. It’s about saying, this is important. This simple quiet leaf matters. Is beautiful. A leaf is as important as any other thing on this earth, don’t you think.

Thank you for our beautiful hours, 2018 [painting]

Thank you for our beautiful hours, 2018

Stayed in bed for an extra hour this morning.
Reading.
Drinking coffee.
Watching the gorgeous morning light fall on this painting.

This is my very first actual painting and I'm very proud of it.
I wasn’t going to sell it.
In the catalogue for the show I wrote:
“P.O.A - aka I”m not sure if I want to sell it… if you like it, let’s talk about it.”

Well, lo and behold, at the preview, a woman who has an amazing eye for art and a most excellent art collection approached me about buying it… plus her partner is a very very good painter himself… and I was just so ridiculously chuffed that these two people who know their stuff rated my painting enough to buy it that I agreed to sell it to them on the spot.

So now, I’m taking lots of photographs of it and enjoying it while I can. It’s going to a good home but it’s very different to sell an artwork you can’t reproduce. I’m so used to working in the photographic medium where even if I sell the whole edition [5], I keep an artist proof for myself to have for ever and ever…

But I’ve always found that having the strength to let go of things makes room for new life to appear. [I'll have to keep painting, eh]

This artwork is “thank you for our beautiful hours, 2018 [for T].

The words read:
thank you for our beautiful hours
for those walls that came tumbling down
It likely won’t come again
of that I’m most aware
but as I’ve already told you
you made your mark on me
you over there, me right here
let’s say cheers
to room number six
and the light through that curtain
breaking.
