NOW WE SHARE THE SAME SKY
"The staircase to the left of the pic was my dad’s flat for the last 5 years within our house. So we’ve gone from sharing the same home to the same sky. Thank you Fleur. I absolutely love it."
When S sent me this photo, along with her words, it brought me to tears. [Thanks, S, for letting me share].
This is exactly why I do my work. It makes me so happy that I can help S remember her father in this way. It's my hope that every single time she walks past this artwork, she remembers him and smiles.
When I made this work, I was thinking of my mother, who is also in the ether. I was thinking of people I loved that I was separated from by physical distance. I made it in 2020, after our first Covid lockdown, and I was thinking of everyone else in the world who also couldn't be with the ones they loved.
The other thing I meant by these words, is that no matter our differences, no matter our politics or social status, we all share the same sky. We all experience love and grief and pain and bliss. We are all the same deep down. Whether we like it or not.
